Waco, TX — The family of a teen who died following a night of drinking with Baylor University’s Sigma Chi fraternity has sued the Greek organization, Reuters reports.
Megan Helal, 19, was a freshman at Navarro College and was dating a Sigma Chi fraternity member when they went to a frat party held at Mynar’s Bar. Helal reportedly drank 10 to 17 drinks within a two-hour time span, and was later found unconscious by her boyfriend.
Helal was rushed to the hospital where she later died. An autopsy showed that Helal died from natural causes, specifically a heart condition.
The lawsuit contends that Helal’s binge drinking led to her March 2010 death. It also alleged negligence and over-serving of alcohol by Baylor’s Sigma Chi fraternity and the owners of Mynar’s Bar.
Helal’s attorneys maintain that she should never have been given a drink of alcohol, because she was underage.
The suit is seeking over $50,000 for medical and burial expenses.
