St. Joseph, MI — The dangers of texting and walking are being highlighted again, after a 45-year-old woman fell into Lake Michigan while texting on her phone and walking on a pier around 9:30 on Monday, March 19, 2012, WoodTV.com reported.

The 45-year-old Benton Harbor woman, Bonnie Miller, was texting and walking on the river side of the South Pier in St. Joseph, when she fell in the lake fully clothed.

Miller reportedly had trouble treading water, before she was thrown a flotation device and a rope by a police officer. Rebecca Van Zant of Mishawaka, Ind. also jumped into the water and was able to keep Miller afloat until rescue personnel arrived, WoodTV.com reported.

Miller was pulled from the water, but it is unknown if she was hospitalized as a result of the fall.

The St. Joseph Fire Department, Michigan State Police and United States Coast Guard all responded to the scene.

It is unknown at this time why there were no railings to prevent the woman from plummeting into the icy water.
