New York City (New York City injury lawyer News) — A 45-year-old mother was critically injured in a Long Island hit and run accident on Thursday, March 8, 2012, according to police information received by New York City injury lawyer Jonathan C Reiter. Police were still searching for the driver suspected of severely injuring the woman and fleeing the scene, as of Monday evening.

The incident occurred in Massapequa just outside Unqua Elementary school, as Ellen Meany was bicycling to her children’s school.. She accidentally banged into the mirror of a parked car and fell off her bike. Just after her fall, a passing motorist crushed the bicycle as well as the woman, as stated in police reports, notes Long Island injury attorney Reiter. Meany had been traveling southbound, against traffic, when the hit-and-run crash occurred.

Nassau County police detective Vincent Garcia told reporters “She sideswiped the mirror, lost control of the bicycle, fell of the bicycle and was hit by a vehicle that was traveling northbound on Unqua.”

A school security camera captured surveillance of the possible hit-and-run vehicle. Police are searching for a blue Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable suspected of the hit and run, and asking those who were in the area Thursday at approximately 11:30 am to contact them if they witnessed any suspicious behavior.

According to a Newsday analysis of federal crash data conducted in late 2011, Long Island has a cyclist death rate that far exceeds the rest of New York City. According to reports reviewed by Long Island injury lawyer Reiter, at least 64 cyclists were killed in crashes since 2005. New York City injury lawyer Jonathan C Reiter explains that the rates of bicycle injuries and deaths is expected to decrease over the following year in New York City as the city implements new safety measures, such as wider bicycle lanes and reduced speed limits.
