The number of New York City traffic-related deaths is predicted to be the lowest of the decade, according to reports from Transportation Nation obtained by Manhattan injury attorney Jonathan C Reiter. New York City reportedly saw 214 traffic-related deaths by the beginning of December 2011, compared to 2010’s 256 deaths.
The fall of traffic-related deaths in 2011 is in conjunction with the past 10 years of declining traffic-related fatalities, except for a spike in 2010. While the number of traffic-related deaths in New York City is at an all-time low, the rate still overshadows that of gun-related fatalities, according to a June 2011 report released by the Drum Major Institute of Public Policy.
As the New York City injury attorney explains, “While the decline in traffic-related deaths in New York City is something to celebrate, its relatively high rate that remains must still be addressed. On average, 317 New Yorkers are killed in traffic-related incidents, and another 3,744 are injured. New York City residents deserve safe streets.”
With the end of 2011 approaching, officials will soon decide whether the NYC DOT Pedestrian Safety Study & Action Plan has continued to lessen pedestrian injuries and deaths.
In August 2010, the DOT launched a strong anti-speeding campaign in an effort to improve safety for pedestrians, motorists and cyclists, explains New York City injury attorney Jonathan C Reiter. The plan’s action items were as follows:
• Install countdown pedestrian signals at 1,500 intersections
• Re-engineer 60 miles of streets for greater pedestrian safety, according to corridor crash data.
• Re-engineer 20 intersections for pedestrian safety on major two-way streets.
• Launch a pilot program to test the safety performance of neighborhood 20 mph zones.
• Implement a pilot program to improve visibility at left turns along avenues in Manhattan.
The report also stated 2009 was the safest year on record in New York City history, having dropped 35% from 2001. As long as New York City sees a safe holiday season, the record may be reset.
