Texas – A recent probe suggests a man was wrongly executed for another person’s crime in Texas in 1989. As reported by AFP, Columbia School of Law professor James Liebman and five of his students researched the case of Carlos DeLuna, who was executed for the 1983 murder of a single mother, for five years and released their findings in a 780 page report on Tuesday.
The report, “Los Tocayos Carlos: Anatomy of a Wrongful Execution,” suggests the sentencing of 27-year-old DeLuna to death was based solely on eyewitness accounts and an investigation that was not deemed thorough.
A statement released with the report is quoted as stating of the case, “Unfortunately, the flaws in the system that wrongfully convicted and executed DeLuna — faulty eyewitness testimony, shoddy legal representation and prosecutorial misconduct — continue to send innocent men to their death today.”
