Alpharetta, Georgia – A woman charged with second-degree murder in connection with a fatal accident is stated to have been talking on her cell phone when the crash occurred. As reported by WSBTV, Haleigh Davis Fine, 23, turned herself into authorities on Wednesday after being accused of causing an accident that killed a 67-year-old man last month.
As noted in the report, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood campaigned for the banning of cell phones in vehicles days after the fatal accident.
Alpharetta Public Safety Officer George Gordon is quoted in the report as stating of the accident, “The heartbreaking thing about this whole thing is we had a totally innocent driver lose his life driving straight in his lane and not doing anything wrong.”
There were approximately a reported 3,000 deaths related to distracted driving in the U.S last year.
