Kearny, NJ — An industrial accident killed a Kearny man when he was hit in the head and neck while operating a piece of machinery at Hummel Machine and Tool Company. The fatal industrial accident occurred around 1:50 p.m. on Friday, May 25, 2011, at the business located on Davis Avenue, reports NJ.com.
According to Kearny police, David Kornas was attempting to turn on a fabricating machine when the machinery made an unusual sound. Kornas turned of the machinery, and a piece of aluminum that was being fabricated suddenly ejected out of the CNC fabricating machine and hit him in the head and neck.
Kearney EMS rushed to the scene and transported Kornas to University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead.
No one else was injured in the workplace accident.
Kornas reportedly worked for Hummel for 30-years.
Investigations into the fatal industrial accident are underway. It is unknown at this time what caused the machinery to malfunction.
