New York – A judge has ruled that Twitter must hand over account information linked to an Occupy Wall Street protestor who was arrested last year. As reported by Reuters, New York Criminal Court Judge Matthew Sciarrino determined that Twitter’s release of the tweets and additional account information of protester Malcolm Harris, who was arrested during a past march on the Brooklyn Bridge, would not be in violation of his privacy rights.
Sciarrino is quoted in the report as writing in his decision, “If you post a tweet, just like if you scream it out the window, there is no reasonable expectation of privacy.”
A spokesperson for Twitter is further quoted by Reuters as stating after the ruling, “Twitter’s Terms of Service have long made it absolutely clear that its users ‘own’ their content… We continue to have a steadfast commitment to our users and their rights.”
