Moscow – Members of a feminist punk rock band have been charged in connection with a protest at a cathedral in Moscow. As reported by Reuters, prosecutors sought a three-year jail sentence on Tuesday for three members of the all female group, Pussy Riot, after they sang a “protest prayer” on the alter of the cathedral.

The women, Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29, have been charged with hooliganism motivated by religious hatred, in connection with the incident.

Federal prosecutor Alexei Nikiforov is quoted by Reuters as stating of the act during closing arguments Tuesday, “Using swear words in a church is an abuse of God… The insult is not to Putin but to the social group of Orthodox Christian believers.”

One of the defendants, Tolokonnikova, is further quoted as asserting when addressing the court, “If we had put on dark balaclavas, someone could have mistaken us for bad people. But we are good people, friendly people who bring goodness and friendliness to the world … We are jesters, clowns, maybe fools. We don’t accept evil being done to anyone.”
