Vermont – A man has filed an anti-slavery lawsuit claiming he was unjustly forced to perform labor while in jail. As reported by ABC News, Finbar McGarry filed the suit after being arrested in 2008 for charges stemming from allegations of threats he made to his family and a university official and firing a gun.

The lawsuit alleges that his rights were violated under the 13th Amendment when he was required to work while an inmate at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility three days per week for six weeks, being paid twenty-five cents per hour. McGarry also claims that unsanitary conditions in the laundry room where he washed clothes for other inmates led to his developing a bacterial infection.

The lawsuit is seeking $11-million in damages.
