US – A new study suggests many of the nation’s poorest couples choose long-term separations over divorce due to their financial situation. As reported by The Huffington Post, the research, recently presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association, shows a percentage of participants did not obtain a divorce within 10 years of their separation due to not being able to afford one.

Zhenchao Qian, study co-author and professor of sociology at Ohio State University, is quoted in the report as stating of the findings, “Those with young children may find it difficult to support themselves and their children if they divorce… Divorce may not protect them because their spouse may be unwilling or unable to provide financial support.”

As noted in the report, the study also revealed that five percent of the separated couples made an attempt at reconciliation, with half of them divorcing in the long run.
