U.S. – The U.S. government has been sued by two heath and environment organizations over a purported failure to implement a food safety measure deemed pertinent to the possible prevention of numerous deaths each year from food-borne illnesses. As reported by Reuters, the Center for Food Safety and the Center for Environmental Health are seeking a federal court order for the enforcement of the Food Safety Modernization Act, for which the groups claim mandatory deadlines had repetitively been missed in issuing final required regulations by government agencies.
Andrew Kimbrell, executive director with the Center for Food Safety, is quoted by Reuters as stating of the issue, “President Obama says the passage of this bill is one of the hallmarks of his first administration… The bill is useless unless the agencies actually promulgate regulations that make it work.”
A reported estimated 3,000 people die each year due to food-borne illnesses.
