Deliberations begin for Amish hate crime trial

Cleveland – Jurors are set to begin deliberations in an Amish hate crime trial in Ohio. As reported by Reuters, deliberations began this week in a case in which Samuel Mullet Sr. and 15 of his followers have been accused of hate crimes for purported religious attacks on nine Amish individuals.

U.S. Attorney Kristy Parker is quoted in the report as stating to jurors that the victims were attacked, “in the most offensive way, in a way that religiously degraded them.”

The charges brought against the16 defendants include conspiracy to commit a hate crime linked to the beard cutting attacks on the victims. If convicted, they could be sentenced to up to life in prison.
