Washington – The license laws for older-age drivers vary nationwide, and for some in certain states, are deemed challenging. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), a review by the news source found many states have implemented requirements for older-age drivers that may include more frequent license renewal or increased vision testing, starting at varying ages.
Many hold different views on the type of and reason for placing restrictions on older drivers. Assemblyman David Gantt of New York is quoted by the AP as stating of the issue, “You don’t want to go around and say, ‘This person is 85. We’ve got to take them off the road.’ That wouldn’t be fair.”
As noted in the report, older drivers are purportedly less likely to be involved in alcohol or speeding related crashes than younger ones, but may face challenges related to vision decline and reaction time that may cause complications with things like merging or changing lanes.
