Michigan – A Michigan woman charged with welfare fraud after admitting to continuing to receive food stamps after winning a state lottery was found dead over the weekend. As reported by Good Morning America, the woman, Amanda Clayton, who pleaded no contest to the charge and was sentenced to probation earlier this year, was found dead Saturday; however, authorities did not immediately release circumstances of her death.
Clayton was stated to have failed to report her $1 million lotto game show winnings and employment while collecting more than $5,000 in assistance for food and medical care.
Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette is quoted in the report as saying in a statement, “It’s simply common sense that million dollar lottery winners forfeit their right to public assistance… We will continue to work with local, state and federal authorities to uphold state laws intended to ensure wise stewardship of taxpayer dollars.”
An autopsy on Clayton’s body is reportedly pending.
