A popular and eccentric woman known for riding her scooter around Greenwich Village was struck by a tractor-trailer on August 27, 2012, and then dragged for several blocks until horrified bystanders frantically motioned and screamed to the driver to stop. Jessica Dworkin, 58, known affectionately as ‘scooter lady’ was crossing Sixth Avenue from east to west about 8:50 a.m. , when the truck’s rear tire clipped her as the truck turned right on to Sixth Avenue from Houston Street. Ms. Dworkin was heard screaming as she went under the tire of the truck, and then was dragged for several blocks as the driver of the truck appeared unaware that he had hit her. He continued up to the intersection of Carmine Street where he stopped the truck, in response to the signals and screams of witnesses. At this point, Ms. Dworkin’s body was seen wrapped around the rear tire of the truck.

The driver stayed at the scene until police arrived and is not expected to be charged criminally. It is not known at this time whether Ms. Dworkin was taken to a hospital or whether she was declared dead at the scene of the accident.

NY pedestrian accident attorney Jonathan C. Reiter, who has handled many motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents stated: “The vast majority of pedestrians who are legally crossing in crosswalks in New York City, are in grave danger of crashes caused by trucks making turns into the crosswalk. There are many contributing factors involved, including intersection design, excessive speed of the vehicle and driver inattention.” The City of New York has recognized the high rate of fatalities caused by this type of accident, and have instituted some design measures at some intersections, but the vast majority have not been re-designed to protect the pedestrian. According to Mr. Reiter, there are several things that the City should do to make cross-walking pedestrians safer, including “re-locating crosswalks to the middle of the block on major streets and traffic lights installed to protect pedestrians from negligent drivers who are literally turning directly into them.” Mr. Reiter stated: “ It is obvious that the City has not done enough to protect pedestrians, since the high rate of fatalities in the City due to these type of accidents continues to be unacceptable.”
