Austin, Texas – The trial involving lawsuits filed on behalf of Texas schools that have purportedly been affected by massive cuts in funding is set to begin on Monday. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the legal battle involves lawsuits filed on behalf of districts who are arguing that the state the $5.4 billion in funding cuts approximately 18 months ago has left them in is in violation of the Texas state constitution.
Attorneys for the districts are reportedly arguing that restoring the levels of funding to what they were just prior to the cuts would effectively provide a fix for the funding issues for Texas public schools, as the state has seen an increase in the number of students classified as low-income.
David Thompson, who is the lead attorney for a group of plaintiffs led by the Fort Bend school district, is quoted by the AP as stating, “You can’t give us the mission…then not give us the tools to accomplish that mission.”
