New York – Record flooding occurred in parts of New York Monday as Hurricane Sandy made its way to the east coast. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the storm led to the closing of the city’s transit system and other normally heavily trafficked areas as residents were ordered to evacuate to get to safer ground.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg is quoted by the AP as stating of the hurricane, “We knew that this was going to be a very dangerous storm and the storm has met our expectations…This is a once-in-a-long-time storm.”
More than a million people were also affected by power outages, with 250,000 customers in Manhattan alone reportedly experiencing a loss of power as the storm continued on its destructive path. More are expected to lose power Tuesday.
