New York – Voters displaced by Hurricane Sandy turned out in large numbers on Election Day, in spite of the remaining desolation from the storm. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), officials worked Tuesday to assist the long lines of displaced voters from areas in New York and New Jersey that have been most heavily impacted by the storm, which has left many still without electricity.
Annette DeBona of Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey is quoted by the AP as stating of getting the opportunity to cast her ballot amid the devastation, “Oh my God, I have been so anxious about being able to vote… It’s such a relief to be able to do it. This is the happiest vote I ever cast in my life.”
Shuttle buses in both New York and New Jersey were used to help transport residents who had been displaced to polling locations.
Ernie Landante, a spokesman for the New Jersey Division of Elections, is quoted in the report as stating of efforts to assist voters, “We are doing everything we can in this extraordinary situation not to disenfranchise voters displaced by Sandy. Their voices and their votes will be heard no differently than anyone else’s.”
