Orlando, Florida – Florida A&M University is reportedly seeking to have a civil lawsuit brought against the school following the hazing death of a drum major dismissed. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), attorneys for the university made the request to Circuit Judge Walter Komanski Wednesday, alleging the student, Robert Champion, 26, willingly participated in the hazing ritual.
Richard Mitchell, an attorney for the university, is quoted by the AP as stating of the deceased student, “Robert Champion knew exactly what he was doing… If Mr. Champion had not gotten on that bus, he would not have been hazed.”
A lawyer representing Champion’s family, who is seeking to have the case heard in front of a jury, is further quoted as stating, “A jury needs to decide how to allocate responsibility for the death of Mr. Champion… Please allow that to be heard.”
A ruling was not reportedly issued immediately.
