Paris – Members of a non-profit group who were convicted and subsequently pardoned for the purported abduction of children in Africa have been charged with fraud and are now on trial in Paris. As reported by Reuters, four of the six Zoe’s Ark members previously jailed in connection with the purported attempt to illegally fly 103 children to France after taking them from Chad, are now being tried for allegedly defrauding families who paid sums after being promised the adoption of a child.

More than 350 families were purportedly led to believe that they would be able to adopt a child from the Darfur region of Sudan.

Eric Dupond-Moretti, an attorney for potential foster families in the case, is quoted in the report as stating, “Everything was done so that these families believed that a child was on its way, and an adoption, based on incompetence at best, and ignorance at worst.”
