New York City – A lawsuit has been filed by ticketed drivers against the city of New York alleging that yellow traffic signals have been rigged to turn red too soon. As reported by Reuters, three drivers who were ticketed for traffic violations filed the suit, which seeks class action status for the projected numerous other drivers cited for red light violations caught on camera, on Wednesday in Manhattan Supreme Court.
Seth Solomonow, a spokesman for the city’s transportation department, is quoted in the report as stating of the case, “While attorneys haven’t had time to fully review the suit, it appears to be based on the same untrue allegations that were investigated and debunked months ago.”
The lawsuit alleges that New York City has collected over $235 million since 2007 from over 300 red light cameras, and is seeking restitution in addition to ordering the city to shut the cameras down until the time for the yellow traffic signals is extended.
