U.S. – Top mobile phone carriers in the U.S. are expected to set up a texting service that allows texts to be sent to 911. As reported by Reuters, AT&T Inc, Verizon Communications, Sprint Nextel Corp and T-Mobile have agreed to set up the service that is expected to be available by May 2014.

The new service is anticipated to primarily benefit individuals who have speech or hearing disabilities, and may have challenges accessing emergency 911 services using the only current means available, by phone.

Julius Genachowski, Chairman of the Federal Communication Commission (FCC), is quoted by Reuters as stating of the service, “Access to 911 must catch up with how consumers communicate in the 21st century and today, we are one step closer towards that vital goal.”
