US – The Red Cross is reportedly readjusting its focus in Hurricane Sandy relief efforts amid criticism over $78 million in unspent donations. As reported by The Lookout, a spokesperson for the agency has stated a “community by community” assessment will be conducted to determine what survivors of the disaster need long-term.

Agency spokesperson, Anne Marie Borrego, is quoted in the report as stating of the issue, “Typically during these kinds of disasters our No. 1 priority is that immediate response… We’re there doing the sheltering and the feeding, etc. In this case, when we’ve raised money that will take us beyond that response, we’re working with communities to determine unmet needs.”

Borrego is further quoted as stating of the agency’s response in getting to areas hit hardest by the storm, “At the end of the day, Sandy was a massive storm…We couldn’t pre-position our people and supplies in the storm’s path. That’s something that’s not going to change.”
