Kansas – A trial has been ordered in a case involving a Kansas state law that restricts insurance coverage for abortions from private health insurance companies. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson ruled Monday that a trial would be necessary to determine whether the law poses a significant hurdle for women seeking to terminate a pregnancy.
In accordance with the state law, private insurance companies are not allowed to offer coverage for abortions in general plans. In a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the organization alleges the costs of an abortion forces some women to delay the procedure in order to save up to finance the costs. Medical risks can increase with the advancement of a pregnancy.
Robinson is quoted by the AP as writing, “This increased cost to women seeking an abortion … creates a genuine issue of material fact concerning the existence of an impact on women seeking an abortion in Kansas.”
