Cairo, Egypt – A former female judge in Egypt’s highest court has filed a legal challenge against the country’s constitution. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Tahani el-Gebali, who has been the only woman to hold a seat in the court, filed the complaint to the Supreme Constitutional Court, alleging it had been drafted and passed illegally.

el-Gebali is quoted by the AP as stating of the matter during a press conference, “The threat to the rule of law and judicial independence is what is most dangerous about the decisive moment that Egypt is going through… Do these people realize what they are doing to the nation?… Blood was shed for the sake of this document.”

The court will reportedly reconvene Jan. 15, but an announcement had yet to be made as to whether the recent legal challenge would be immediately discussed.
