Boulder, Colorado – Two Boulder police officers were arrested Friday in the killing of an elk. As reported by ABC News, the Officers Samuel Carter and Brent Curnow face multiple felony charges in connection with a shooting incident in which a large, neighborhood bull elk died.

The incident reportedly occurred New Year’s Day when one of the officers was stated to have seen the elk limping while on patrol. A department news release is quoted as stating of Officer Carter, “In his judgment, he believed the elk needed to be humanely euthanized… The officer dispatched the elk with one shot from his shotgun and called another off-duty officer to come pick up the elk carcass.” The elk was subsequently reportedly taken by Officer Curnow to process for meat.

The incident was not reported by the officers as required, and they were placed on unpaid leave.

Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner is quoted in the report as saying in a statement, “We realize that this case has hit a sensitive nerve in the Boulder community, and I want to reassure our community that I understand their concerns and that I intend to hold these officers accountable for their actions… If the allegations are sustained, the discipline for such allegations – including being untruthful – would typically be termination from employment.”
