Little Rock, Arkansas – An Arkansas woman died after a 911 operator error, in which they failed to enter her call into a computer system to dispatch police and firefighters. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the woman, Jinglei Yi, 39, who died hours after making the emergency call, was trapped inside of a vehicle in a pond with her 5-year-old son. Her son was stated to be in critical condition Wednesday.

An ambulance was dispatched to the scene minutes after Yi called 911, despite the delay in notifying police and firefighters. The operator who handled the call has reportedly been placed on paid administrative leave as the circumstances of the incident are being investigated.

Laura Martin, who directs the city police and fire departments’ communications branch, is quoted in the report as stating of proper protocol, “Proper protocol would be … we have a one-button transfer switch where you get (the ambulance service) on the line and you remain on the line with them until you’re sure that they have handled the call.”
