RABAT, Morocco – The Moroccan government is reportedly planning to make changes to the penal code, which allows rape marriage. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Justice Minister Mustapha Ramid’s recent announcement indicated the traditional practice would be outlawed in the reform of the code.

The announcement comes following controversy over the suicide of a 16-year-old last year, who poisoned herself after being forced to marry her rapist.

Khadija Ryadi, president of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights, is quoted by the AP as stating of the planned changes, “Changing this article is a good thing but it doesn’t meet all of our demands… The penal code has to be totally reformed because it contains many provisions that discriminate against women and doesn’t protect women against violence.”
