Washington – Leaders in law enforcement met with President Barack Obama this week to discuss gun control measures. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), although the sheriffs and police chiefs present did not fully support all of Obama’s gun control efforts, they urged him to tighten background checks for gun purchases and mental health systems.

Obama is quoted by the AP as stating regarding the meeting, “Hopefully if law enforcement officials who are dealing with this stuff every single day can come to some basic consensus in terms of steps that we need to take, Congress is going to be paying attention to them, and we’ll be able to make progress.”

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey, president of the Major Cities Chiefs Association, is further quoted as stating, “You’re not going to get 100 percent of people to agree on anything as it relates to gun control, and we’re no different, but a majority of people in the room recognize that something needs to be done.”
