Washington – A group of civil rights attorneys have filed for an injunction against continuing surveillance of Muslims by the New York Police Department without evidence that crimes have been committed. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the attorneys assert the continued surveillance is in violation of a landmark legal ruling, which outlines what are known as the Handschu guidelines.

The attorneys are quoted as writing in a motion filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York this week, “There is substantial persuasive evidence that the defendants are conducting investigations into organizations and individuals associated with the Muslim faith and the Muslim community in New York, and have been doing so for years, using intrusive methods, without a reasonable indication of unlawful activity, or a criminal predicate of any sort.”

It has yet to be determined when a ruling will be made regarding the recent motion.
