Washington – The Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning to doctors regarding a fake version of the cancer drug Avastin. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the latest incident is the third to occur over the last year involving counterfeiting of the popular drug used in the treatment of cancers of the brain, colon, and other organs.

A statement by the FDA was posted online Tuesday, saying at least one batch of the fake Avastin was found to not contain an active ingredient in the real version.

The agency is quoted by the AP as stating in its warning that U.S. doctors should be cautious of “too good to be true” drug prices and that, “Deep discounts may be offered because the product is stolen, counterfeit, substandard, or unapproved.”
