Washington – The Senate has voted in favor of renewing the Violence Against Women Act. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the measure was reauthorized by the Senate 78-22 two decades after it was first implemented.
The act, which expired in 2011, was approved with the addition of giving equal access to anti-domestic violence programs to immigrants, Native American women, gays, and lesbians.
Sen. Patty Murray, D-Washington, is quoted by the AP as stating of the legislation, “Over 160 million women across the country are watching and waiting to see if the House will act on this bill and finally provide them the protections from violence they deserve.”
