Texas – A Texas inmate convicted in the 1994 killing of his ex-girlfriend was the first to be put to death by lethal injection in the state this year on Thursday. As reported by Reuters, Carl Henry Blue, 48, was executed at the state penitentiary at Huntsville and pronounced dead at 6:56 p.m. according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Blue reportedly doused his ex-girlfriend, Carmen Richards-Sanders, 38, and another man with gasoline and set them on fire in her home. The man survived his injuries; however, Richards-Sanders died several days later of related organ failure.

Blue is stated to have turned himself in afterward, claiming the incident was a prank and it was not his intention for Richards-Sanders to die.
