Brisbane, Australia – Australian prosecutors are pursuing new charges for manslaughter against a U.S. surgeon who was acquitted in the manslaughter case regarding an elderly patient in a state-run hospital in 2003. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Jayant Patel is expected to be charged again in the deaths of two additional patients stemming from the time period when he acted as chief surgeon at Bundaberg Base Hospital.
An inquiry by the Australian government found that Patel may have been a contributor to the deaths of 13 patients at the hospital, but charges were narrowed to three counts of manslaughter and one count of grievous bodily harm.
Patel received convictions in 2010 and was sentenced to prison for those charges but the country’s highest court overturned his convictions.
