Kansas City, Missouri – Eight men have been accused in a paddlefish poaching scheme in which they purportedly sold their eggs as caviar. As reported by Reuters, the men were indicted on trafficking charges this week in connection with the unlawful taking of the protected species following a multi-year investigation.
Transporting paddlefish eggs that have been taken from the carcass of the fish is prohibited in the state of Missouri. The American paddlefish is deemed by many states to be an endangered species.
For the federal charges of violating the Lacey Act, the men may receive up to five years in prison and be required to pay a fine of up to $250,000 if convicted.
