Amsterdam – Congolese warlord Bosco Ntaganda was set to make his first public appearance before the International Criminal Court in the Hague Tuesday. As reported by Reuters, the appearance comes after Ntaganda eluded arrest for seven years.
Ntaganda stands accused of several war crimes charges including recruiting child soldiers, rape and murder. The incidents are stated to have occurred over a 15-year period in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Geraldine Mattioli-Zeltner, international justice advocacy director at Human Rights Watch, is quoted by Reuters as stating of Ntaganda’s court appearance, “Ntaganda’s appearance at the ICC after years as a fugitive offers victims of horrific crimes a real hope of seeing justice… Ntaganda’s detention in The Hague shows that no one is above the law.”
