Rochelle, GA – Teens at a South Georgia high school are trying to raise funds to break from tradition and hold an integrated prom. As reported by ABC News, a group of four friends from Wilcox County High School are seeking host the event, while other students and parents take steps to organize separate proms in the 1,200 person town.
White high school senior Stephanie Sinnot is quoted in the report as stating of the segregated proms still being held year after year, “We’re embarrassed; it’s embarrassing.”
Wilcox County Schools Superintendent Steve Smith is further quoted as stating of the efforts being made by the students to change things, “I fully support these ladies, and I consider it an embarrassment to our schools and community that these events have been segregated… Skin color seems to be a much larger issue for the adults than the students, and my prayer is that this effort will be a huge step toward reconciling the wrongs of the past.”
