West Virginia – A West Virginia teen was arrested after wearing a National Rifle Association shirt to school, which led to a confrontation with a teacher. As reported by ABC News, Jared Marcum, 14, was arrested after refusing to remove his t-shirt or turn it inside out as instructed by a teacher who purportedly confronted the teen while he was getting his lunch.
According to Logan City Police Chief E.K. Harper, the arrest was made because Marcum had allegedly disrupted the school process and not because of his wearing the t-shirt. Harper is quoted as stating of the teen, “His conduct in school almost incited a riot.”
Marcum’s attorney, Ben White, is further quoted by ABC News as stating of the incident, “Jared respects firearms and has training to use them, and believes in the Second Amendment… He believes it’s being threatened by current legislation. He wore [the shirt] as an expression of political speech and the need to protect the Second Amendment.”
Marcum was reportedly suspended from school for one day after returning wearing the same t-shirt.
