Washington – The Internal Revenue Service offered an apology Friday for “inappropriately” targeting tea party groups for possible tax-exempt status violations. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the agency acknowledged IRS agents singled out certain organizations whose exemption applications included the words “tea party” and “patriot” for additional reviews.

Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt groups, is quoted by the AP as stating of the issue of purported political targeting during an American Bar Association sponsored conference, “That was absolutely incorrect, it was insensitive and it was inappropriate. That’s not how we go about selecting cases for further review… The IRS would like to apologize for that.”

Several investigations by Republicans in Congress are reportedly underway.
