Texas – Texas lawmakers approved a measure requiring some applicants for unemployment benefits to take drug tests. As reported by Reuters, the state House passed a bill Wednesday 104-42, which had already received approval by the Senate, that would require screening of applicants who seek to work jobs that already require drug testing.

Republican Brandon Creighton, the House author of the bill, is quoted in the report as stating of the measure, “The intent of this bill is to help lift people up and help them towards a better way… and at the same time making sure that the unemployment benefits fund is solvent and there to help those that need it the most.”

A separate bill related to drug testing of welfare applicants was passed by the Senate, but rejected in the House on Tuesday.
