After being approved for Social Security benefits, in the event that one’s circumstances change thereafter, they may see their benefits terminated. Beneficiaries should have an understanding of what may cause them to stop receiving disability payments even before applying.

What may contribute to a discontinuation of benefits for those receiving Supplemental Security Income and those receiving Social Security Disability may vary. Individuals who are receiving both may see payments stop if there is improvement in the condition for which they initially qualified.

With regard to Social Security Disability, recipients may become ineligible by:

• Reaching the age of retirement

• Becoming imprisoned after being convicted of a crime

• Working and earning over a certain amount of money

• And other factors

With regard to Supplemental Security Income, recipients may become ineligible due to:

• Reaching the age of 18

• Receipt of additional support for food or housing

• A parent’s increased income if the recipient is a child

• The acquisition of assets

• The income of one’s spouse or an increase in their own income

• And other factors

The Social Security Administration has discretion to initiate a Continuing Disability Review (CDR) on SSI and SSDI recipients and will periodically request treatment records to verify whether the disabling condition has or has not improved. Whereas, when an individual is receiving benefits, it’s very important to keep detailed information regarding when and where treatments are received.
