Colorado – A discrimination complaint has been filed on behalf of a Colorado gay couple against a bakery after they were purportedly refused a wedding cake. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the American Civil Liberties Union initiated the complaint, which was formally filed by the Colorado Attorney General’s office last week, on behalf of David Mullins and Charlie Craig after the Masterpiece Cakeshop denied them a cake in honor of their marriage ceremony.

Mark Silverstein, the legal director of the ACLU in Colorado, is quoted by the AP as stating of the case, “Religious freedom is a fundamental right in America and it’s something that we champion at the ACLU… We are all entitled to our religious beliefs and we fight for that. But someone’s personal religious beliefs don’t justify breaking the law by discriminating against others in the public sphere.”

The cake shop has reportedly refused to provide wedding cakes for other gay couples also.

A hearing of the case before the Colorado Civil Rights Commission is set for September.
