Rochester, NY – A county in North Florida is allowing a monument to atheism to be installed outside of a courthouse. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Bradford County reached a deal to allow the monument to be installed near a Ten Commandments monument at the courthouse following lawsuit filed by the American Atheists organization.
The organization filed the lawsuit seeking removal of the Ten Commandments monument after it was erected last year, and a countersuit was filed by the Christian Group that paid for it demanding that it be allowed to stay in place.
Dave Muscato, public relations director for American Atheists, is quoted by the AP as stating to the Gainesville Sun, “it’s only appropriate that we have matching monuments,” if religious groups are allowed to have them.
The county reportedly established a “free speech” area in 2011 where both monuments will be located.
