San Francisco – A judge has not yet made a ruling in the case involving the purported exposure of thousands of inmates at two California state prisons to an airborne fungus. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), an attorney representing the inmates told U.S. District Judge Thelton Henderson Monday that the fungus presented the widespread threat of valley fever, which could prove deadly for thousands of inmates for whom he said an immediate transfer should be arranged.
Walter Schneider, an attorney representing the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, stated to the contrary that a study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health should be allowed to be completed prior to the arrangement for an inmate transfer. The study will purportedly be completed December.
A reported 18 deaths have been linked to the fungus.
