Washington – A House panel has begun rewrites of GOP President George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act, to revamp the existing education law, which has been a source of controversy. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), House Republicans completed their version of the rewritten bill Wednesday, which would place more authority in the hands of states regarding measuring the educational success of students.

Democrats on the panel rejected the Republican’s proposal and offered a revision of their own that did not pass the GOP committee.

Both sides agree that amendments should be made to the Bush-era No Child Left Behind law, but are debating on how much oversight or authority should be shifted to states and how much should remain in the hands of the federal government regarding public education.

The Senate education panel has also reportedly completed a revision of the law; however, a vote on the bill has not yet been scheduled.
