Washington – The Senate has passed historic legislation related to immigration in the country. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the House is expected to take action next month on the measure, which the Senate voted 68-32 to approve Thursday.
Included in the bill would be the placement of 20,000 new Border Patrol agents and 700 miles of fencing along the U.S. –Mexico border in addition to high-tech devices. The bill would also allow individuals who are living in the country illegally to obtain legal status during the implementation of the border security plan, but not permanent resident green cards or citizenship among other things.
President Barack Obama is quoted by the AP as saying in a written statement of the Senate’s action on the measure, “Now is the time when opponents will try their hardest to pull this bipartisan effort apart so they can stop commonsense reform from becoming a reality. We cannot let that happen.”
