Austin, Texas – Texas Republicans voted Wednesday to move forward with new abortion rules. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the vote was sent by a House committee to the full Texas House to be voted on next week.
Over 3,500 people came to the Capitol registering a position on the bill and over 1,100 signed up to give testimony. The House committee limited testimony to eight hours at a public hearing and refused to consider amendments proposed by Democrats.
House State Affairs Chairman Byron Cook, R-Corsicana is quoted by the AP as stating, “We took testimony in the regular session, in the first special. We’ve taken a lot of testimony.”
Gay Caldwell, who spoke in opposition of the bill, is quoted by the AP as stating, “This bill is about women’s lives, and I don’t think you want to play politics with women’s lives.”
