Connecticut – A woman who was injured in a chimp attack is suing the state of Connecticut for $150 million. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Charla Nash, who was injured in 2009 by a friend’s chimpanzee and disfigured, is appealing a decision by the state claims commissioner to dismiss her case in which she asserted that at the time of her attack state law permitted private ownership of chimpanzees.

Nash’s attorneys are quoted as writing in an appeal to the legislature Wednesday, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection “had the unequivocal authority to seize an animal whose existence threatened public health and safety.”

The attorneys further wrote, “The DEEP, however, did nothing; it took absolutely no action, completely ignoring the danger that the primate posed to the citizens of the state of Connecticut.”

Nash reached a settlement with the estate of the chimp’s owner last year for $4 million. The owner of the chimp died in 2010.
