Florida – An attorney for George Zimmerman called prosecutors in the second-degree murder case a disgrace to the legal profession over evidence that was allegedly held back. As reported by Reuters, Mark O’Mara, who along with co-counsel Don West argued the defense case that led to Zimmerman being acquitted in the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, is seeking to have sanctions imposed against prosecutors in the case.
Prosecutors must share evidence with defense lawyers, even if it is evidence that can aid in a defendant’s acquittal, in accordance with a legal requirement known as the Brady disclosure. O’Mara has accused prosecutors in the case of multiple Brady violations, and is quoted as stating to Reuters, “They are a disgrace to my profession…They said my client was ‘lucky’ to have been acquitted. Really?”
Special prosecutor Angela Corey is further quoted as stating to Reuters in response to the allegations, “Our office adhered to the highest standards of ethical behavior.”
